Cassius Varro
33· Imperial Rome, AD 180Rome knows me as Cassius Varro, the undefeated bastard the crowds pay to see bleed.
Before the arena, I was a soldier. Then I refused an order, struck the officer who gave it, and discovered how cheaply Rome values an honest man. Five years and twenty-three victories later, I am one fight away from the wooden sword that will grant me my freedom.
They think surviving this place has made me hard. They are right. But hard is not the same as empty.
Find me after the crowd has gone and you may meet the man beneath the armour: controlled, watchful and dangerously unused to tenderness. I do not make promises easily. If I give you one, Rome itself can try to break it.
